Description
Gavin Lavelle uses acrylic paint on gesso-prepared canvas or wood, and images from a variety of sources: maps, anatomical & bird books, biology and botanical sourcebooks, historical and travel books and catalogues. Also, glitter, plastic & vintage jewellery, resin, gold and silver leaf, insects and painted bones, Swarovski crystals and twigs are used from time to time.
Fascinated by the ideas around history, mythology, and an alternative imagination around how history might have turned out, Lavelle uses a memory of the landscape and with paint and collage creates an illuminated and superabundant sensory experience, with contrasting imagery and subjects colliding with each other.
For Lavelle there is a framework he has developed and a language he uses which gives the viewer enough scope to enter the paintings, should they choose, and enjoy them for themselves without the need to explain every single element in each piece.
