Biography

Ed Miliano was born in New York in 1954. He received a BFA in 1976 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Before becoming a full-time artist, Ed worked for over twenty-five years as a designer and illustrator in the USA and Ireland.

His work is most often about nature and landscape and, in particular, man-made landscapes like gardens. Ed sees gardens as transitional spaces that link where we live to the larger, natural landscape. They are bridges between domestic life and the natural world. He will often group paintings together to create a larger, collective image — one with more information. When viewed together, the separate paintings become an entirely new experience.

In 2011, Miliano embarked on an ambitious project to paint his garden from the studio window every day for an entire year. He called this epic work Diary. It was exhibited as part of the Futures 12 exhibition at the RHA in 2012. The work includes 366 separate paintings. The paintings are displayed on narrow wooden shelves.

Miliano has been in several RHA Annual Exhibitions. He has had two one-man exhibitions at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin: Flower Paintings in 2004 and Paintings and Drawings from Dar es Salaam in 2011.

Ed paints out of his studio in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
