Biography

Neil Dunne is an Irish printmaker, specialising in screenprinting. Dunne graduated from NCAD with an Honours BA in Fine Art/Printmaking and Art History in 2014, and received the 2015 – 2017 NCAD post-graduate scholarship. Dunne has since exhibited internationally and in Ireland and has won numerous awards including being short listed for the Student legacy prize at the Hamilton gallery, Sligo (2016) The ‘Clancy Barracks studio residency’ (2016), the AXA Insurance Award (2014), OPW purchase award (2014) and he was also nominated for the NCAD Staff Prize (2013). Dunne was a recipient of the Mary Cawley Travel Bursary in 2013 and spent a summer working at Dieu Donne in Manhattan, New York working with contemporary printmakers and specialist paper makers.

Neil Dunne’s practice explores formations and compositions derived from an inherent involvement with street art and culture and an investigative approach to deciphering the city. Dunne’s artworks are a fundamental exploration of paint, taking influence from his background in printmaking and the tangible, graphic nature of the discipline while exploring the textural and dynamic uses of oil painting; Dunne’s abstracted work alludes to the various attributes of the built environment – the forceful nature it has on our perceptions of space, but also the intricate way in which we negotiate the fabric of our cities. . His work delves into the processes via a diverse use of material within his abstract paintings, using the city as a matrix for his creativity. Dunne uses a series of layers including drawings, photographs and found objects to record and document his experiences and his immediate environment. With this technique his work provokes an abundance of emotional and nostalgic responses through these visuals. His practice becomes a platform for social observation, initiating a physical and imaginary exploration of these spaces.
