Born in Dublin, Daniel Holfeld grew up in Ireland and graduated with a BA [Hons] degree in photography from Dublin’s Institute of Technology in 2008.
After graduation Holfeld exhibited his work in the New York Photo Festival, where he was nominated within the best emerging photographer category. Leading on from his success in New York, Holfeld was invited to participate in exhibitions in London’s St. Pancras Cathedral and exhibitions in Paris and Croatia.
Now based in Ireland Holfeld has worked as a luxury fashion photographer for more than a decade, retaining the high-end quality and eye for perfection in his fine art photography. With his extensive travel experience, Holfeld has re-emerged as a photographic artist. While on assignment in Morocco, Holfeld was deeply moved and inspired by the culture; therefore he created a powerful and collected series of architectural photographs of artistic content and style.
Holfeld spent much time travelling to Morocco between 2016 and 2018. He captured photographs that celebrate the complex Arab-Islamic, Berber and Moorish heritage of Marrakesh and Casablanca. Drawn to both public and private buildings, the rich complexity of mosque architecture and the Andalusia-style courtyard design of the Moroccan riad, Holfeld draws comparisons between his process and that of the author or poet, composing his images with light and shade but also rhythm and rhyme. Writing with light, his eye seeks out quiet vignettes, the moment of stillness amid opulence and grandeur: for example the play of shadows on zellige tiles; the gentle repetition of naves and sandstone arcades; or the perspectival recession of Moorish- style scalloped keystone arches.
